CALL NBC EVENT

Subject: New campaign from daysfan1965 @ SOC

"Save Guiding Light" NBC Call-In Event - This Friday, 7/10 at 4pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have begun the "Save Guiding Light" NBC Call-In Event" to take effect this Friday, 7/10 at 4pm. Guiding Light airs in various affiliates from 10am - 4pm. Immediately after the final broadcast of Fridays episode, fans of Guiding Light will call into NBC's Comment Line to have them pick up Guiding Light.

Please, only post your positive beliefs so we take drastic steps towards this movement. If we get enough fans to call in at that time (and even after), they will consider the calls rather than disregard them.

I called Jeff Zucker's contact that I had posted in the contract thread. Obviously, he won't pick up, and I was directed to the comment line, where I left my message.

One message will not cut it, but hundreds will.

Please call 212-664-4444 for an indirect line which will direct you to the NBC Viewer Contact Line.

Or just call the NBC Viewer Contact Line directly at 212-664-2333.

Soapmom, please put this out there! You did such a great job with your rally! I need your assistance! Every poster, please put this out there and call NBC on this date and time. If anyone has connections, pass this info around.

Please help Save Guiding Light. NBC has never said they wanted out of the soap business, so don't disregard this movement because of that false rumor. Days of our Lives is doing great, so don't think they will determine the decision to leave the soap industry.

Thank you all for the support and help Save Guiding Light!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings

Dear Friends,
I know it continues to be a very difficult time for Guiding Light fans, especially with the rumors and speculation that is out there.

I now that the departure of Crystal Chappell may have shocked a few of you, but the good news is that she will remain with GL until the end of its CBS run on September 18. I know others are upset to hear that Gina Tognoni will not be around as GL wraps in early August. Gina's contract was set to expire this week, and speculation is that she could not reach an agreement with GL. It is also believed that she may have indeed signed with another NY based soap. While many fans feel she "owed them" to remain, and that the show needed to meet any demands that may have been made for the remaining six weeks of filming, I think it is important for fans to realize contracts aren't that simple due to agreements between the shows and NAFTRA (the actors union to which most daytime actors belong). Non-contract players must be paid a minimum of $400 per episode according to one source. Keeping that in mind, the way GL now tapes, an actor could work several days taping for ONE episode. That being said, these people need to begin to look at what the future holds for them. They have been in a holding pattern since April 1st, and many of them have been searching for a place to land, and you can't blame anyone for taking a secure deal, when GL cannot offer that at this point.

Even if GL were picked up, sources are saying that it would take at least six months to begin production. That is a long to sit idle as an actor.

Some of you may have also read the very disheartening article insinuating that Proctor & Gamble wanted to get rid of GL, and sabotaged it on purpose. Please remember, that is the writers OPINION, and there are no facts to back it up. This is all on the heals of the revealing of Phillip Spaulding's illness, and many fans are already bitching about it because they beleive they will kill Phillip off before the series finale, yet none of us know for sure what the scribes will actually do at this point. It could in fact be great story if people are willing to watch it play out before going off the deep end.

What I am about to say my offend some of you, but so be it. A large part of GL's problems do not stem from the production changes and shakey camera work. They aren't all Ellen Wheeler's fault. It isn't the Otalia storyline. No a large part of the woes GL has had stem from the fickle fans who want what they want and to hell with everyone else. These so-called fans have done nothing but bash, belittle and condemn everything and anything about the show for years now. They are eager to leak information from "insiders" even if the information is flat out misinformation. They seek to stir the pot and create drama behind the drama and all of it is detrimental to the show. I laugh when I read board posters shouting that PGP needs to listen to the fans as if they have all of the answers and know what they are talking about.

It has been my contention for a long while now that the amount of spoilers that find their way out has played a role in the decline in viewership for all daytime serials. The suspense is gone. Throw in the archaic Nielsen system and the entire industry is in trouble.

I don't know how other fans treat other soaps because I have yet to venture to see what they are saying, but if they are like a large number of the GL fans...it won't be long before the next shoe falls. Negativity does no one any good, and that's what you see out on the net, way too often.

TV LAND

I am hearing that Lifetime may have in fact passed on GL, and that it maybe time to begin hitting TV Land with those phone calls, postcards and emails. I know we go from hearing nothing to hearing all kinds of rumors and speculation about the future of the show and what network(s) are and are not interested, but we need to continue to show our support for PGP and Guiding Light. We need to let them know were are a very loyal group of viewers who will follow the show and when the times comes, its sister show As the World Turns.

Strength in Numbers: Let's Continue to Help Support PGP in the Quest to Keep the Light Shining....and the World Turning

I will admit, Guiding Light IS my show. I follow no other show with the passion and dedication that I have for GL. So, I have to admit that I know nothing about As the World Turns other than it is also owned by Proctor and Gamble Productions and it known as GL's sister show.

In light of GL's cancellation by CBS, we have also heard the rumors that CBS plans on dropping ATWT when its contract ends in September 2010. Guding Light fans already know the pain that came with the announcement of GL's fate on April 1, 2009, and I am pretty sure we all agree that we would hate to see the same thing happen to ATWT fans next year.

Since both shows are owned by PGP, we beleive that they are an attractive package. What if PGP could show a potential network the potential to draw in over 4 million new viewers who would follow both shows to a new home?

At this time, we are preparing another campaign in support of PGP and its soaps.
Saty tuned for more information.

GL's Future Addressed
TeleNext addressed rampant online rumors that GL is currently in talks with both Lifetime and Oxygen networks in effort to find the soap a new home. In a statement, Senior VP Brian T. Cahill said, "We continue to explore all our options to find a new home for GUIDING LIGHT. At this point, we are not able to comment or speculate about any potential partnerships. Our conversations are ongoing and, in the interest of keeping them moving forward, we cannot offer any additional perspective. We will certainly communicate broadly if and when a decision is made about the future of the show. We thank all our loyal fans for their continued outpouring of support.

Keep the Light Shining Video

From Otalia Fan:

Misquoting Grant

Since the beginning of the Keep the Light Shining campaign one thing that I have tried very hard to do was avoid anything that was not verifiable or positive in nature. I never wanted, nor do I want this campaign to take on a negative tone.

Unfortunately, on Friday May 1st, the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, KDKA ran a feature containing several Guiding Light actors who participated in a find raiser for the Young Women's Cancer Foundation but apparently never bothered to proof its own work.

KDKA places a written synopsis of the video they ran on the air almost immediately following the broadcast. However someone at KDKA apparently failed to proof the write up before publishing it on the web site. In the video Robert Newman spoke of the possibility of Guiding Light continuing on a cable network such as Lifetime. If you watch the video it is apparent that Robert is grabbing examples of cable stations. However in the article it states that Grant Aleksander made those statements. Since then several other soap related sites have published the incorrect information, because they apparently did not go back and watch the video version of the interview.

In the interview we hear the reporter, not Grant Aleksander make the statement that Grant returned knowing the show would be dropped, yet if you listen to what Grant says following the voice over you get the feeling the reporter is putting words in Grant's mouth. Until I hear Grant utter those words, I am taking it with a grain of salt.

I am a life long KDKA viewer, and the way KDKA handled this piece from the beginning has been a great disappointment. They waited for almost a week after the event to air this segment, which was plenty of time to get it right. First, the reporter called Grant Aleksander Phillip in the video, and they didn't take the time to correct the error. That coupled with the shoddy job of transcribing it on their own web site is extremely disappointing. Equally disappointing is the number of people out there who didn't take the time to watch the video that is posted with the transcription to check for accuracy. Instead, all of those people have only done one thing: perpetuate rumors and misinformation.

What we know: Rumors had been circulating about GL future long before Grant Aleksander decided to return. When he returned he knew there was a possibility the show would be canceled. (If that helped him make his decision to return, more power to him.).

We also know: That we all knew the contract with CBS was up for renewal and that the ratings were at an all time low. And we know, and I have gotten this from several set side sources, that Ellen Wheeler and PGP are working hard to find GL a new home.

And we know that....accuracy is obviously unimportant in today's media. Shame on you KDKA, Bill Burns must be shaking his head at the way news is covered by today's media!

Cast Tells Pittsburgh "Keep Fingers Crossed"

ENCOURAGING NEWS!
On Sunday, April 26, 2009 several Guiding Light cast members attended the Young Women's Breast Cancer Research Foundation Gala in Pittsburgh. I have learned from a local resident who attended the event that the cast announced "keep your fingers crossed, there is something in the works!"

Keep those cards and letters going! Keep making those phone calls! Support PGP in its efforts to Keep the Light Shining!

Keep Sending Postcards and Emails

I know it has been quiet out there folks, but do not lose heart. Keep on making those phone calls, sending those postcards and writing those emails. I can assure you that the cast and crew know we are out here, and they know we are doing whatever we can in order to be heard.

I am well aware of the many rumors posted all over the Internet about who is interested, who is not, etc., but at this point that is what they are, rumors.

I will continue to do my best to keep you updated as "new" information comes my way. At this time, I will say that I am being told that P & G are working hard to find us a new home in some form. I have no specifics, no details, no names of potential networks, only the reassurance that P & G is not giving up.

ON LINE VIEWING CAMPAIGN and Demographic Survey

DEMOGRAPHIC SURVEY TO BE SENT TO TPTB

Please take a moment to complete this brief survey. I have asked to be the liaison between the person collecting the data and the studio. We would like to be able to gather as much data as we can to provide PGP/Telenext with information in support of Keeping the Light Shining!

Make Your Viewing Count

As the end of April approaches, and May begins, let's join together and watch Guiding Light online this week! I am not going to specify a time, just suggest that we all tune in online all week in order to be counted. Let's show CBS that we are out here and we do count!

My apologies to my friends abroad and in Canada, I know you cannot participate, but I know you will be with us all in spirit!

Saving Our Shows...are we taking the wrong approach?

While surfing the net today I came across this rather interesting article which provides food for thought. We all know that the TV industry makes decisions--on what shows live and die using the antiquated Nielsen Ratings System, and most of us who watch do not count, not really anyway.

If you heard my rantings during my interview on BuzzWorthy Radio a few weeks back, you heard me say that younger people no longer watch television the way we did, in fact many do not watch television at all; they view their shows online at their convenience, not during a scheduled time slot. This is only one gripe I have about the industry still basing decisions on the Nielsen's. Online viewing isn't considered in the Nielsen system, which in my opinion means that the Nielsen system is far from accurate.

Take a look at what this journalist has to say.

Perhaps we all need to tune in to Guiding Light Online!

Don't Give Up Hope

Dear Friends,

I know the past few weeks have been very frustrating. First the announcement that CBS would not be renewing Guiding Light, then the waiting and wondering in hopes that PGP-Telenext can find GL a suitable new home.

I urge you to continue contacting Lifetime, as well as other cable networks such as: Oxygen, WE, USA, etc.

Daytime Confidential is reporting that GL is still in talks with Lifetime, but if they are neither PGP or Lifetime are commenting at this time. They are also reporting that there are other networks on the list who have been showing interest in saving the 72 year old icon.

Keep sending off those postcards, emails and letters. Keep making phone calls if that is what it takes, just keep on being heard. That is what we can do right now, and that is what we need to continue to do until we hear something more definite.

Keep the LIGHT Shining!

Let USA TODAY know that we want to see Guiding Light saved by writing in GL on their Save Our Shows Poll!!!!!!! Be sure to explain why you want to see GL remain on the air!

Could WE be interested in GL? Some seem to beleive that the Women's Entertainment Network could be on PGP's list of possible new homes for the show. Let WE know how much you would love to see GL picked up! Email them. Send them postcards. It can't hurt!

There is currently a poll on the Lifetime boards. Although Lifetime is insisting that they are not interested in soaps at this time, participating in the poll cannot hurt. The more noise we make, the more we get noticed.

If you read my entry last night (see below) I am a little upset with the two print publications that cover the soaps for what I see as a mistreatment of GL over the past year or so. I encourage everyone to let them know that we the fans still love and believe in GL! I know there was a time they were claiming that the fans were not writing to them in support of the show, but I believe that was an excuse used to cover the fact that they were not publishing letters in praise of the show, only those that supported their opinion.

Good-Bye SOD and SOW

This past fall I decided I was not renewing Soap Opera Weekly, or Soap Opera Digest. The main reason, I got tired of being able to stand in line at the local store and read them several days before they arrived in my mailbox.

Today however, I have decided that I will no longer be purchasing either SOD or SOW weekly at the supermarket or newsstand any loner either. Why? Because of the continuous trashing of Guiding Light at every turn. You would think that a publication that is dedicated to the genre would want as many daytime shows to survive as possible considering that it is their bread and butter. Yet both of these publications have done nothing but ignore or trash GL for quite a while now.

Ironically, one medium that is beginning to die off faster than the daytime drama is the print magazine. Some in the industry are predicting that the daytime drama will be gone within as little as five years. So I ask you SOW and SOD, "where is your paycheck going to be coming from when you have effectively helped kill off the genre that supported you for all these years?" I'll bet you think there will be some other publication just waiting to hire you right? Wrong. Publishers are pulling the plug on magazines left and right. Newspapers are shutting down at a rapid rate.

Many tears have been shed since the announcement of CBS's decision not to renew GL, but I can assure you, no one will so much as blink and eye when SOD and SOW are no longer on the rack in the checkout isle.

The Keep the Light Shining Campaign began months before the news came on April 1st, 2009 that CBS was not renewing the show. It was a postcard campaign stemming from a group of fans suggesting that we send a Duracell battery to the studios. When questions began arising about what they would do with all of those batteries at the studio, someone came up with the idea of creating a postcard that incorporated the battery idea and the GL Theme. The next thing you knew fans were creating postcards using many different Proctor and Gamble products and slogans to get their message across..."Keep the Light Shining"!

Above is an example of one such postcard and even baby "Peyton Raines-Spaulding" was not left out.
